The Performance Centre Pages are under review and redesign for 2018-19

If the information you require is not available - please ask.

The Performance Centres are part of England Hockey's Player Pathway for players between from U14 to U17. It sits between the Academy Centres and NAGS (National Age Group Squads).

Players at Performance Centre may, at their discretion, participate in the Academy Centre programme. Though they should consider their overall sport schedule before doing so. Academy Centres may not requrie you to do both but some may recommend that you only do the Performance Centre.

The positions of NAGS players is not final, but it is expected that those in the U16 squads will be required to participate fully at PC and those in the U18 squads will not. If the U18 players are not required to attend PC then for those eligible for the following season's NAGS squad, a route will be found to engage them in the selection process which may be after Futures' Cup.

The Performance Centres provide a mix of training and game play oportunities between September and July. Following the PC there is Futures' Cup in late August for selected players only.

Click here for a diagrammatic overview of the single system. Click here to view the talent development booklet issued by EH detailing the coaching principals and feedback criteria.

Selection and Transition

The number of places at PC is fixed, so any nomination from an AC coach is a recommendation for assessment. The PC coaches will assess the player against the others nominated, including those for other ACs, and those already at PC and decide whether it is appropriate to offer a place. A nomination is not a guarantee of a place.

At the end of the season AC coaches will be able to nominate players for selection to the next cycle of the Performance Centre starting in September.

  • next U15 PC (current AC U13 & U14) the numbers from each AC are likely to be 10-15 at U14 and 5-8 at U13
  • next U17 PC (current AC U15 & U16) the numbers from each AC are likely to be 0-2
  • current U17 PC (current AC U17) these players are ones likely to reach the NAGS squad in the current cycle, they should have been spotted during the season; consequently it is not expected that any such players will be nominated though the possibility exists

There will be a one one selection event for the U15s. U17s will be assesed during a standard PC session.

Based on EH's 'right player, right environment' players will be able to move between AC and PC and also PC to AC during the cycle. AC coaches will be able nominate those players who are significantly outperforming their peers for immediate transition. These players will be assessed as soon as pratical. Players who move from PC to AC will be told by their PC coach which components of their game need to be sharpened up for them to be re-admitted to the PC.

EH have produced a number of guides for selection and transition. Please click the appropriate link below:

Venues

There are 17 centres around the country. The closest centres for those in the South are:

Centre Venue Cluster
    Haslemere  Haslemere HC Leopards
North Downs  not fixed Tigers
Northwood Merchant Taylor' School Tigers operated by East
Reading not fixed Lynx
South Midlands   Warwick School Lynx operated by Midlands
Southampton Wellington Sports Ground (KES)  Leopards

Those at boarding school will be allowed to choose whether to be allocated from home or from school.

We will try to allocate players to their nearest centre. However, as the number of players at each centre is fixed and the centre is not always in the middle of the catchment area, players may not be allocated their nearest centre.

Costs

Cost
  £200
U18 NAGS/AASE Training Only
£160

The fees for 2017-18 are still being discussed however the number of hours in the programme has increased significantly so the fees will be increasing. The exact rate has not been set.

Those players at NAGS and AASE who are young enough to compete for a place in the following season's NAGS will be full members of the Centre and pay full price. Those U18s who will be too old for the following season but who are required to train will not be part of the competition element and will pay the reduced training only fee.

For those attending a South run centre, the fees can either be paid by:

ebanking to sort code 30-92-45 account 43681268 (Southern Counties HA), using a composite reference of

 - the first letter of centre which you are allocated

 - the age group (eg U16B)

 - first 8 characters of the player’s surname and first initial
cheque made payable to Southern Counties Hockey Association, the address will be provided with the centre allocations

Payment is preferred by ebanking. If you have multiple children at Performance Centres, you may make a single payment for all children with the same surname and drop Tony an email.

No payment is required until the centre allocations are announced.

Kit
Playing kit and additional items such as hoodies are available. They are available on a hidden page on the EH Shop website. Please ask Tony for it if you don't have it.

Outfield players are required to have:

  • playing shirt (the Performance Centre programme shirt, with allocated shirt number)
  • navy shorts (boys) / skorts (girls)
  • blue and navy socks

Goalkeepers are required to have the Performance Centre smock (not yet available, with allocated squad number)

The shorts and skorts can either be those from the Performance Centre kit list, any self-provided Adidas or unbranded items.

Goalkeepers

Goalkeepers will at the same location and at the time as the rest of their squad. The Golden Thread principle that governs the training format uses game play situations for most of the coaching. Whilst there will be some specialist goalkeeper training they will be involved in more of the exercises. These exercises will be designed so that the goalkeepers can take a full part in them rather than just being cnnon fodder for a final shot at goal.

Goalkeepers are expected to provide their own kit, this to include helmet, throat protector, chest pad, arm and elbow protection, gloves, abdominal protector, leg pads and kickers.

Communication

Communication will be by email, much of what will be sent will be large batches of individually addressed emails. It is inevitable that some of these will be caught by spam filters. If you are expecting one of these mass emails from the central administration please click here to view the emails that have been sent and any planned schedule for future mass emails.
