Welcome

Caterham Centre

In conjunction with England Hockey, Southern Counties HA has decided to close the Performance Centre at Caterham at the end of the 2018-19 cycle.

There are a number of factors behind this decision:

  • When the Performance Centres were set up, it was felt that 5½ were needed in the South. Since then NAGS players are no longer required to attend PC and the number of places required has decreased.
  • The exchequer grant to England Hockey, as well as to other sports, has been reduced. EH used funding from this source to fund the PC Head Coaches. This funding has been slashed and savings need to be made.

Whilst this change was likely within the next few years (probably in 2020-21),  the reduction in external funding has brought forward this decision.

Players currently at Caterham and those who were expecting to be trialling for the centre in June will be allocated to their most appropriate centre. The majority will be going to either Guildford or Tonbridge. There may also be some currently at Guildford who will be moved to Reading, Southampton or Weybridge. All affected players will be contacted by the end of June.

Some players will have longer journeys to their centre from September, but all journeys should still be less than the suggested maximum of 90 minutes.

To minimise the number of existing players who do not get places in the next cycle, we are planning to offer a few additional places at the neighbouring centres. However, at the end of the cycle it is usual for one or two U16s (2003) and up to a third of the U15s (2004) moving to the U17 squad not to be invited to the next cycle.
